CHAPTER 14: The Gate Opens Slowly

Freedom did not arrive like movies promised.
There was no music when Caleb signed release papers. No dramatic sunrise at the exact right angle. A clerk misspelled his middle name twice. An officer could not find his civilian belt. Someone returned his old wallet in a plastic bag with the corners cracked and the photograph of June inside faded almost white.
Then the final door buzzed.
Caleb stepped through.
June stood beyond the gate in a navy coat too thin for the cold. For three seconds they only looked at each other, separated by the small patch of pavement where prison stopped pretending it owned him.
Then she ran.
Caleb caught her carefully, because prison had taught his body to expect impact from every direction, and family should never feel like an ambush. June buried her face in his shoulder and shook with the kind of crying she had postponed for three years.
"You are real," she said.
"You are loud."
"I had to be."
He held her tighter. "I know."
Reporters waited near the road. Naomi held them back with one raised hand and the power of a woman who had spent months turning grief into filings. Caleb answered only one question.
"Do you want revenge?"
He looked past the cameras at the prison walls, at the windows where men still watched from behind thick glass.
"I want the truth to cost enough that people stop buying lies."
In the following weeks, Falcon Security lost its state contracts. Graham Pike was indicted. Harlan Price agreed to testify against the former prosecutor in exchange for a sentence that still made him disappear behind the kind of doors he once controlled. Evan Holt pled guilty and faced Travis's mother across a courtroom where money could no longer hold silence in place.
Caleb moved into June's spare room because neither of them knew how to be alone yet.
On his first morning free, he woke before dawn and stood in the kitchen, unsure what to do with a refrigerator that opened whenever he wanted.
June came in wearing slippers and found him staring at a carton of eggs.
"Breakfast?" she asked.
Caleb nodded.
His hands trembled when he reached for a plate.
Not from fear.
From choice.
