CHAPTER 7: The Spoon That Should Not Exist

Caleb kept the spoon under his sleeve until the lunch bell ended.
It was ordinary prison metal, dull at the edges, stamped with Copper Ridge inventory numbers. The letters scratched into the handle were not ordinary. L.G. Lennox Gray. A dead kitchen worker. A witness no one had allowed to become one.
Malik walked beside Caleb toward the library cart. "You need to get rid of that."
"You just gave me a camera map."
"A map is paper. That is evidence, which is prison for target."
They reached the library room, a narrow space with law books no one updated and novels with missing endings. Amos sat near the back table, white beard trimmed close, hands folded over a Bible he did not appear to be reading.
Caleb placed the spoon on the table.
Amos did not touch it. His eyes watered before his face admitted anything.
"Lennox had a habit," Amos said. "Marked his tools because men here steal anything that fits in a pocket."
"Why would his spoon be on my tray?"
"Because kitchen crews remember things. Because someone wants you to know Lennox left more than rumors."
Malik closed the library door halfway. "The old server keeps thirty days. Not four years."
Amos shook his head. "Server does. Maintenance tapes do not. Falcon made backups during the upgrade. Lennox found a tape, or a copy, or a list of who came through intake the night Travis Holt died. He told me one name before they took him."
Caleb leaned in.
Amos looked at the closed door. "Evan Holt."
The name struck the room like a thrown chair.
Travis Holt's younger brother had cried on television during Caleb's sentencing. He had held his mother's hand and said the family wanted peace. He had never been mentioned at the bar.
"Evan was there?" Caleb asked.
"Lennox said a Falcon car brought him to the emergency gate at 12:11 in the morning. Clothes dirty. Knuckles wrapped. Price signed him in as a medical escort and signed him out eight minutes later."
Caleb felt the old courtroom tilt around him.
If Evan Holt came to Copper Ridge's back gate after Travis died, then the prison, Falcon, and the prosecutor had been connected from the beginning.
A knock sounded at the library door.
Malik shoved the spoon into a hollowed legal dictionary.
The door opened.
Price stood there, smiling.
"Reading hour is over."
