CHAPTER 9: The Hearing They Tried to Rig
The disciplinary hearing took place in a room that smelled of coffee and old decisions.
Price sat beside the hearing officer with Caleb's cafeteria report in front of him. The report said Caleb initiated violence after verbal disagreement. It said Rusk attempted to disengage. It said no reliable video angle captured the start of the incident.
Caleb listened without reacting.
Naomi Bell had taught him the value of making liars use all their words.
When the hearing officer asked for his statement, Caleb said, "Play the steam-line camera."
Price sighed. "As stated, that camera is inactive."
"Then show the maintenance log proving it."
The officer glanced at Price.
A small movement, but enough.
Caleb placed both hands flat on the table. "The camera above the steam line recorded locally because it was left off the Falcon network. You know that. Rusk entered from the aisle behind me. He forced my face into the tray. I stood only after he released me."
Price folded his hands. "Interesting story."
The door opened.
Rusk entered with two officers. His wrists were cuffed. His face had lost the theater that once made men look down at their food.
"I want to make a statement," he said.
Price's chair scraped. "Inmate Rusk has not been cleared for testimony."
Rusk looked at the hearing officer. "I was told to start it. Deputy Warden Price gave the order through Falcon's man, Graham Pike. I was supposed to make Mercer swing first before his appeal. He didn't. I lied because I was scared."
The room went still.
Price stood. "This is coercion."
"Yeah," Rusk said. "Yours."
Before anyone could answer, the hearing room monitor flickered on. A grainy video appeared: the cafeteria, the aisle, Rusk's hand grabbing Caleb from behind, Caleb rising with rice and greens on his face, the clean defensive sweep, the spoon falling to the floor.
No one moved.
Then the image froze on Deputy Warden Price watching from the glass booth before the attack began.
The hearing officer whispered, "Who uploaded this?"
From the hallway speaker, Amos's old voice crackled through the intercom.
"A hungry man found the trash."
