CHAPTER 12: Samuel Vale Smiles for the Cameras
Samuel Vale was not arrested that night.
He had too many lawyers, too many old favors, too many hands trained to catch him before he hit the floor. Grant was taken from Apex Tower in silence, but Samuel left through the front doors smiling for the cameras that had gathered after the leaked video.
“Maya has always been emotional,” he told reporters. “Our family is handling a private misunderstanding.”
By breakfast, the story had shifted again.
Grant Pierce had become a victim of corporate entrapment. Vanessa had become a confused socialite manipulated by a hidden billionaire. Samuel presented himself as the grieving uncle trying to protect a troubled niece from Chairman Reed’s influence.
Maya watched his interview from Edward Vale’s old office.
Vanessa sat on the sofa opposite her, wrapped in a borrowed coat, her mascara cleaned away. Reed stood by the window, speaking quietly with prosecutors who were willing to investigate Grant but still hesitated at the Vale name.
“Samuel will say I attacked Grant,” Vanessa said.
“Did you?” Maya asked.
“I hit his wrist.”
“Then say that.”
Vanessa looked down. “You make truth sound simple.”
“No. I make it expensive.”
A faint, bitter smile touched Vanessa’s mouth.
Maya placed a folder on the table. Inside were the three deleted employee complaints, the tray incident statement, and a draft civil claim against Vanessa.
Vanessa’s face closed. “You are suing me.”
“Yes.”
“After I helped you?”
Maya’s voice remained even. “You helped yourself become slightly less guilty. You still hurt employees before me. You still lied. You still tried to make me kneel in front of a room because you thought no one would defend me.”
Vanessa had no answer.
Reed ended his call and approached. “Samuel has requested a family mediation.”
Maya almost laughed. “He means a private room without cameras.”
“He also sent this.”
Reed handed her a sealed envelope.
Inside was a copy of Edward Vale’s final medical record. Across the bottom, a note had been written in Samuel’s hand:
Ask Reed why your grandfather changed the trust only after seeing him alone.
Maya looked up slowly.
Reed’s face had gone pale.
For the first time since the double doors opened, the chairman looked less like authority and more like a man with a secret.
Vanessa whispered, “What does that mean?”
Maya kept her eyes on Reed.
“Yes,” she said softly. “What does it mean?”
