CHAPTER 14: The Storage Unit Opens

The storage facility sat under an overpass in Queens, far from the gold columns of Apex Tower.
Rain hammered the metal roof while Maya entered the code with her bandaged hand. Reed stood to her left. Vanessa waited behind them with two security officers and the brittle courage of a woman walking toward the wreckage her own family had helped build.
The unit door rolled up.
Dust breathed out.
Inside were twelve boxes, a broken lamp, three framed photographs, and a waterproof case sealed with Edward Vale’s initials.
Maya opened the case on the concrete floor.
Her father’s voice recorder lay inside.
So did bank statements, construction invoices, and a small memory card wrapped in paper. On the paper, her father had written:
If I do not return, Reed must give this to Maya when she is ready. Not before.
Maya looked at Reed.
His grief was immediate and unhidden. “He trusted me.”
“He also knew you would delay.”
Reed accepted that without defense.
The memory card contained rooftop footage from the night before the boating accident. Grainy but clear enough. Samuel argued with Maya’s father beside the unfinished east wing model. Grant, younger and not yet famous, stood in the background carrying a contractor badge.
Maya’s father said, “You cannot sell a building you do not own.”
Samuel answered, “Ownership is paperwork. Fear is power.”
Then Grant stepped forward and struck the camera.
The footage ended.
It was not murder.
But it was motive, conspiracy, and the first real thread connecting Samuel and Grant years before the merger.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“My mother knew,” she whispered.
A phone rang from one of the boxes.
Everyone froze.
It was impossible. The phone was old, its battery supposedly dead, wrapped under yellowing receipts. Yet the screen glowed with an incoming call from a blocked number.
Reed nodded to security, then answered on speaker.
Samuel’s voice filled the storage unit.
“Finding old ghosts does not make them useful.”
Maya stepped closer. “My father found you.”
“And died with questions.”
“Grant is in custody.”
“Grant is replaceable.”
Vanessa’s eyes widened.
Samuel continued, almost pleasantly. “The board meets tomorrow. If Maya attends, the rest of her father’s story dies with Reed.”
Outside, tires screeched.
The lights went out.
