CHAPTER 2: The Tray on the Marble
Apex Tower was built to make powerful people look taller.
Its ballroom rose beneath three crystal chandeliers, with gold mirrored columns reflecting every tuxedo, every diamond, every practiced smile. At the center of the room, investors formed a soft circle around the gala table, waiting for the merger announcement that would bind Apex Tower to Grant Pierce's luxury development empire.
Maya Vale crossed the marble floor carrying a round silver tray with three stemmed glasses of dark berry mocktail.
No one looked at her face.
That was the first thing she had wanted to know.
In the uniform, she became furniture. A white collared shirt. A fitted black vest. A low ponytail. Silver earrings small enough not to offend rich women who believed shine belonged only to them. The guests saw the tray before they saw the hand holding it.
Vanessa Crowne saw more.
She stood beside Grant in a burgundy evening gown, diamonds against her throat, a smile sharpened by the kind of inheritance that had never had to prove itself. Her shoulder turned just as Maya passed.
The impact was deliberate.
Maya steadied the tray. Vanessa's hand flashed next, swatting silver, glass, and berry liquid into the air.
The crash silenced the ballroom.
Three glasses shattered across the marble. Dark liquid splashed over Maya's left vest. The tray flipped upside down beside her right knee as she dropped, one hand catching the floor, the other recoiling from the sting of glass and pressure.
A broken cry escaped before she could stop it.
“Ah! Please—why would you do that?” Maya gasped, facing the woman who had struck her.
Vanessa looked down as if watching a stain spread. “Servants don’t stand with family.”
Guests froze. A few mouths opened. None spoke.
Maya kept her eyes lowered for one beat longer than pride allowed.
Not because she was weak.
Because across the room, behind the centered double doors, the hallway lights had just brightened.
Chairman Reed was due at any second.
And Maya had waited three years for the truth to enter through the front door.
