CHAPTER 6: Vanessa Finds the Old Photograph

Vanessa did not go home after the gala.
She went to her mother’s townhouse, still wearing the burgundy gown and a face stripped of triumph. The housekeeper opened the door and wisely vanished. Upstairs, in a cedar-lined wardrobe, Vanessa tore through boxes that had not been touched since her mother’s stroke.
Letters. Guest lists. Old society photographs. Invitations from the Vale family before tragedy made their name useful gossip.
At the bottom of the final box, she found what she wanted.
A photograph.
Maya at seventeen, standing beside the late Edward Vale on the rooftop terrace of Apex Tower. Her dark hair loose, her smile unguarded. Edward’s hand rested proudly on her shoulder. Behind them, Chairman Reed appeared younger but already watchful.
On the back, in Edward’s handwriting, were five words:
My heir sees everything.
Vanessa’s hands shook.
“She was never dead,” Grant said from the doorway.
Vanessa had not heard him enter. His tie hung loose, and the controlled cruelty he wore in public had burned down into something rawer.
“You followed me?” she asked.
“I lost a nine-hundred-million-dollar merger in fifteen seconds. Of course I followed the woman who told me the waitress was nobody.”
Vanessa turned on him. “You humiliated her too.”
“Because you said she was safe to humiliate.”
The sentence landed between them like another shattered glass.
Vanessa looked back at the photograph. Years earlier, after Edward’s daughter died in a boating accident, rumors spread that his granddaughter had become unstable, vanished, perhaps overdosed somewhere anonymous. Vanessa’s mother had repeated those rumors over lunches with women who collected tragedy like jewelry.
But there had always been another story.
A sealed trust. A hidden heir. A girl moved out of the country after someone tried to force her to sign away her inheritance.
Grant stepped closer. “If Maya owns Apex, she owns the service contracts, the development rights, the residential floors—everything.”
“And she can destroy us.”
“Unless we destroy her first.”
Vanessa looked at him then.
For the first time all night, he sounded frightened.
Grant picked up the photograph and smiled without warmth. “A hidden owner makes a romantic headline. A mentally unstable heiress in a waitress costume makes a better one.”
Vanessa swallowed.
“You want to leak it.”
“No,” Grant said. “I want to bury her before she learns who buried her the first time.”
