CHAPTER 1: The Fall in the Ballroom

The sound was small, but the whole ballroom heard it.

A silver hair ribbon slid across the polished marble floor and stopped beside a fallen champagne flute. The glass did not break. It only rolled once, caught chandelier light, and lay still as if the room itself had stopped breathing.

Six-year-old Lily was on the floor.

Amelia dropped to her knees so quickly her white satin gown folded beneath her. She pulled the little girl into her arms, one hand cradling the back of Lily’s head, the other pressing gently against her shaking shoulder.

“Lily, look at me,” Amelia whispered.

The child’s lavender tulle dress was twisted at one side. Her pale face had gone nearly white. A thin streak of blood marked a small cut at her forehead, not deep, but enough to turn Amelia’s fear into something colder.

A few steps away stood Ethan Whitmore.

Thirty-two, handsome, wealthy, dressed in a perfect black tuxedo, he looked less frightened than offended. Behind him stood his parents and a line of guests who had spent the evening praising him as if goodness were inherited with money.

Ethan lifted both hands slightly.

“She tripped,” he said coldly. “That’s all.”

No one moved.

Amelia looked at the silver ribbon on the floor, then at the champagne flute, then up at Ethan.

She had known men like him all her life. Men protected so long by family money that truth felt, to them, like poor manners.
