CHAPTER 8: The Room Learns to Speak
The aftermath did not explode. It settled.
That was almost worse for Ethan.
The security manager radioed for police and medical assistance with professional calm. A hotel staff member brought a first-aid kit. Amelia allowed only a female medic and the security manager near Lily. Ethan was told to remain where he was.
No one called it dramatic now.
No one called Lily confused.
A woman who had whispered earlier that the child might have slipped came to Amelia with tears in her eyes.
“I’m sorry,” she said. “I should have spoken up.”
Amelia looked at her, too tired for cruelty. “Next time, don’t wait for a camera.”
The woman nodded, ashamed.
That sentence traveled farther than Amelia intended. People heard it. Guests lowered their eyes. Some because they had doubted. Some because they had known better and chosen comfort anyway.
Ethan’s father tried to speak to the security manager in the hallway, but Mr. Lawson cut him off.
“All communication goes through the authorities now.”
The father looked stunned, as if rules were a foreign language when applied to his own blood.
Lily rested her head on Amelia’s shoulder.
“Is he going to be mad?” she whispered.
Amelia kissed her hair gently.
