CHAPTER 7: Not This Time
Ethan tried one final time to regain control.
He straightened his tuxedo jacket, lifted his chin, and looked at Amelia as if she were still someone he could intimidate.
“You’re going to ruin my life over a mistake?”
Amelia stared at him.
A mistake.
As if Lily’s fear were an accident. As if his hand had moved without him. As if the years of being protected had made him innocent instead of worse.
Behind Amelia, the security manager remained still, tablet in both hands. The footage was saved. The ribbon was still on the floor. The champagne flute still lay unbroken beside it. The room still remembered.
Amelia shifted Lily higher against her chest.
The child whispered, “Can we go home?”
“Yes,” Amelia said softly. “We’re going home.”
Then she looked back at Ethan.
His arrogance was draining now, replaced by something uglier and smaller: fear without remorse.
Amelia had waited years to say what Grace never got to say.
She said it now, low and steady.
“Not this time.”
Ethan’s face collapsed.
