CHAPTER 2: Don’t Come Any Closer

Amelia lifted Lily carefully into her lap.

The thin blood streak frightened her, but Lily was conscious, breathing, and able to focus. Amelia kept her voice low, because panic would only give Ethan more room to lie.

“You’re safe with me,” she said.

Ethan stepped half a pace forward.

It was a small movement, but the room felt it. His polished shoes clicked once against the marble. Behind him, his mother’s face tightened in warning, not because she feared what he had done, but because she feared who had seen it.

Amelia slowly looked up.

“Don’t come any closer,” she said.

The words were quiet.

They landed harder than shouting.

Ethan gave a short laugh. “You’re making a scene.”

“A child is hurt.”

“She’s dramatic.”

The old poison. The family language. Minimize the harm. Question the victim. Shame the witness.

Amelia felt anger move through her, but she held it steady. Lily needed a protector, not an explosion.

A wealthy guest near the nearest table whispered, “Maybe she did slip.”

Another guest looked away.

That was how people like Ethan survived. Not because everyone believed them, but because enough people preferred comfort over courage.

Lily buried her face against Amelia’s shoulder.

Amelia touched the small cut with a clean white napkin and watched Ethan’s eyes follow the movement. He was not worried about Lily.
