CHAPTER 6: The Family That Protected Him
Amelia had not always hated the Whitmores.
Once, she had tried to believe they were simply cold, formal, old-fashioned people who mistook control for care. Her sister Grace had married into the family with hope in her eyes, convinced love could soften privilege.
It did not.
Grace spent years apologizing for Ethan’s cruelty at family gatherings. He ruined birthdays, humiliated staff, frightened younger cousins, and smiled whenever his parents explained him away.
“He’s under pressure.”
“He didn’t mean it.”
“Don’t make it worse.”
After Grace died, Amelia promised herself Lily would never be swallowed by that same silence.
But families with money do not surrender access easily.
They invited Lily to holidays and public events, always with cameras, always with soft voices, always with the implied threat that Amelia was being unreasonable if she refused.
Tonight was supposed to be harmless.
One wedding reception. A few hours. A room full of witnesses.
Amelia had believed that many eyes would keep Lily safe.
Now she understood the terrible truth: witnesses mean nothing if everyone is trained to look away.
Ethan’s mother stepped toward Amelia, tears forming too late.
“Amelia, please. Think about the family.”
Amelia tightened her hold on Lily.
“I am.”
The words stopped the woman cold.
