CHAPTER 1: The Girl Who Walked Away
The street outside the hotel still shone from the rain.
Black cars waited along the curb, their windows dark, their roofs beaded with water. Inside the glass entrance, chandeliers glowed over people who measured worth by surnames, invitations, and the price of a woman's gown.
Rachel stood beside the black sedan in a silver one-shoulder dress, her red hair pinned perfectly above pearl earrings. In one hand, she held a silver clutch. In the other, she held nothing at all, because she had already let go of Noah.
He stood in front of her in a black dress shirt and dark blazer, calm enough to make her impatient.
She smiled as if the conversation were simple.
“I can’t build a life with a man who has nothing.”
The words landed between them on the wet sidewalk.
Noah did not flinch.
That disappointed her.
She had expected him to plead, to explain, to promise he would become someone impressive one day.
Instead, he only looked at her with a quiet sadness that made the expensive street feel suddenly cold.
