CHAPTER 1: Then I Won’t Stop You
Noah had learned long ago that some insults were not meant to describe you.
They were meant to reveal the person speaking.
Rachel lifted her chin, waiting for him to fight for her. The hotel doorman watched from a distance. Traffic blurred past the curb. The black sedan remained parked beside them, engine silent, as if the night itself had paused to listen.
Noah held his phone loosely in one hand.
He did not call anyone.
He did not show her a bank account.
He did not say his name the way other men in his world said names, like weapons placed on a table.
He only said, “Then I won’t stop you.”
Rachel’s smile faltered for the smallest moment.
A man with nothing should have looked afraid of being left.
Noah looked wounded, but not afraid.
That bothered her more than tears would have.
“That’s it?” she asked.
“That’s it,” he said.
And for the first time, Rachel wondered whether she had misunderstood the shape of the man standing in front of her.
