CHAPTER 6: Upstairs Was Waiting

The hotel behind them was not just a hotel.
Rachel knew that now.
The glass entrance, the stone facade, the private dining room upstairs, the sedan at the curb, the staff who had moved around Noah with quiet attention—it all rearranged itself in her memory.
She saw every sign she had ignored because it did not flatter her assumptions.
Carter glanced toward the entrance. “Sir, your father asked that you come before the board dinner begins.”
Noah nodded once, but did not step away yet.
Rachel felt panic rise beneath her polished surface.
“Noah, wait.”
He did.
That was almost worse.
Even now, after what she had said, he gave her enough respect to listen.
“I didn’t know,” she said.
“I know.”
“If I had known—”
He stopped her with one quiet look.
The sentence could not save her because its ending condemned her.
If she had known he was rich, she would have stayed.
That was not love.
It was a price correction.
