CHAPTER 2: The Poor Man She Invented

Rachel had not always been cruel to Noah.
At first, she called him refreshing. She liked that he did not brag. She liked that he drove an old car sometimes, wore simple shirts, and never corrected waiters who assumed he was ordinary.
But admiration changed when her friends began asking questions.
What does he do?
Who are his people?
Why does no one know his family?
Rachel began filling the blanks with her own fear. She decided modest meant poor. Quiet meant unimportant. Private meant ashamed.
Noah let her believe what she wanted because he had spent his life watching people perform for the Whitmore name. He wanted one person to love him before knowing what stood behind him.
For a while, he thought Rachel might be that person.
Then came the invitation to the charity dinner upstairs.
Rachel saw him arrive without a designer watch and without a visible driver. She saw wealthy men nod at him but assumed politeness. She saw hotel staff step aside and assumed coincidence.
By the time she followed him out to the curb, she had already chosen the version of him she wanted to leave.
A poor man.
A mistake.
A story she could survive telling her friends.
