Carter stepped out from the visible driver’s side of the sedan.
He was polished in a black suit and tie, earpiece neat against his ear, car key in one hand. He closed the door with care and walked toward Noah with the kind of respect that could not be mistaken for friendship or coincidence.
Rachel stared at him.
Carter stopped one step behind Noah.
“Mr. Whitmore,” he said, “your father is waiting upstairs.”
The name moved through Rachel like a sudden drop in an elevator.

Not because it was uncommon.
Because in that city, there was only one Whitmore family people meant when they lowered their voices around money.
