CHAPTER 2: The Name They Never Asked
Elena rose slowly from one knee.
She did not wipe her hands on her apron. She did not rush, apologize, or lower her head again.
The movement changed the room before her words did.
Sophia's smile faded a little. Margaret narrowed her eyes, irritated by the small rebellion of a housekeeper standing upright.
"What do you think you're doing?" Margaret asked.
Elena kept her hands calm at her apron.
"You should have asked my name first."
The sentence was quiet, but it moved through the ballroom like a door opening somewhere no one expected a door to be.
Margaret gave a short laugh. "I don't ask staff for names. That's what management is for."
Elena looked past her toward the gold-framed mirror on the far wall. In its reflection, she could see the chandelier, the fireplace, the guests, and herself standing where Margaret thought she did not belong.
For years, she had walked through rooms like this unnoticed by people who measured worth by fabric, jewelry, and surnames.
Tonight, invisibility had served its purpose.
