CHAPTER 8: No Longer Welcome

Margaret's face turned pale before Elena spoke the final words.
Perhaps she heard them coming.
Perhaps she had spent a lifetime understanding power when it wore diamonds, but not when it wore an apron.
Elena stood beneath the chandelier, calm and straight-backed.
"And your wedding is no longer welcome here."
The sentence did not need volume.
It had architecture behind it.
The gold walls, the marble floor, the antique chairs, the white fireplace, the staff along the edges of the room, every polished inch of the hotel seemed to agree.
Sophia stared at her mother, waiting for rescue.
Margaret found none.
Guests shifted carefully, suddenly eager not to appear too closely connected to the humiliation they had just watched.
Elena did not order anyone dragged out. She did not enjoy the fall.
That was what made her power feel complete.
She looked at Sophia's gown train, still spread over the floor.
"Have someone lift your dress," Elena said. "No member of my staff will kneel for you again."
