CHAPTER 7: The Bride Learns Fear
Sophia touched her veil again, but this time the gesture was not elegant.
It was nervous.
The long white train still lay across the marble floor where Elena had been ordered to kneel. The lace had not moved. The chandelier still glowed above them. Margaret's diamonds still sat at her throat.
Nothing physical had changed.
Everything else had.
"You can't ruin my wedding," Sophia said, but the sentence broke at the end.
Elena looked at the bride with a sadness that was more cutting than anger.
"I did not ruin it. You revealed it."
Sophia's eyes filled, not with remorse yet, but with the first panic of a person discovering consequences are real even in a beautiful dress.
Margaret stepped in front of her daughter. "We will sue."
"You may try," Elena said.
She turned toward the staff captain by the fireplace and gave the smallest nod.
He did not need instructions spoken aloud.
Phones were not raised. No announcements were made. No scene expanded beyond the room.
Professionalism, Elena knew, was sometimes the sharpest blade.
