CHAPTER 5: I Own This Hotel

Margaret's voice lost its polish. "Who are you?"
Elena took one calm breath.
"I own this hotel."
No one dropped a glass. No one screamed.
The room simply stopped pretending it did not understand.
Sophia's mouth parted. Margaret blinked once, then again, as if the words might rearrange themselves into something less damaging.
Elena did not smile.
That made it worse.
"No," Margaret said. "The owner is--"
"Standing in front of you," Elena finished.
The chandelier shimmered overhead. Its light reflected in the marble floor, in the gold mirror, in Margaret's diamond necklace, and in the fear beginning to reach her eyes.
Sophia looked from Elena's uniform to her mother's face, searching for an adult who still had control.
She found only silence.
Elena's apron remained tied around her waist. Her uniform had not changed. Neither had her posture.
Only their understanding of her had.
