Chapter 1 – The Wrong Kind of Guest
Evelyn Reed kept her eyes on the marble column and her hand moving in careful circles. The white cloth was damp, folded twice, and warm from her palm. Around her, the ballroom glowed with chandeliers. Gold chairs curved around banquet tables. Champagne glasses caught the light like tiny fires.
She had been told to finish before the speeches began. At sixty-eight, invisibility felt safer than attention.
Then a polished voice reached her.
"You know this is a private gala, right?"
Evelyn looked up. A young woman in a champagne evening gown had stopped near the column, one hand around a flute. Vanessa Hart smiled as if kindness were a costume she could put on for witnesses.
"I'm just finishing up, ma'am," Evelyn said.
A few guests turned. Evelyn lowered her gaze.
"Try not to ruin the atmosphere."
She walked away, dress whispering over the floor. Evelyn stayed still, cloth pressed to the stone. Then the room changed. Just enough for the air to tighten.
From the main ballroom aisle, Michael Reed had stopped walking. His tuxedo was perfect, his face suddenly pale. His eyes were fixed on Evelyn.
He came toward her slowly, past the tables and guests, as if every step crossed twenty-five years.
When he reached her, his voice came out low.
"Mom?"
