CHAPTER 1: Chapter 2 - The Name No One Expected
Evelyn's hand dropped, but the cloth stayed caught between her fingers. For a moment she only stared at Michael, as if the word had touched an old wound.
"Michael," she whispered.
The ballroom went quiet in layers. Vanessa turned back from the banquet aisle, champagne flute still in her hand. Her smile disappeared.
Michael placed one hand on Evelyn's shoulder. The other stayed empty at his side. He looked at Vanessa, then at the guests who had watched without helping.
"No one talks to my mother that way."
The words were calm, but they landed harder than a shout. Vanessa opened her mouth, then closed it. She was too polished to argue, but not enough to hide her shock.
Evelyn tried to step back. "You don't have to do this here. I was only working."
"You shouldn't be working at my gala," Michael said.
"It isn't your fault."
He looked at her name tag. Evelyn M. Reed. The same last name. The same tired eyes from the photograph he kept hidden in a drawer.
Now she stood in front of him with a housekeeping apron and shame she did not deserve.
Behind him, someone murmured, "His mother?"
Michael heard it. His jaw tightened.
"Please come with me," he said softly. "Not as staff. As my guest."
Evelyn's eyes filled, but she did not cry. "I don't belong at those tables."
Michael looked at the glittering room, then back at her.
"Then neither do I."
