CHAPTER 2: Chapter 3 - A Seat at the Table

Michael guided Evelyn toward the nearest round table. Everyone understood it. He was not hiding her. He was making the room rearrange itself around the truth.
A waiter hurried forward, uncertain what to do. Michael pulled out the gold chair beside his own.
"Sit here," he said.
Evelyn hesitated. Her fingers worried the cloth until he took it carefully and folded it on the edge of the table, visible, not discarded.
"Michael, people are watching."
"Let them."
Vanessa approached again, her confidence rebuilt only on the surface. "Michael, I had no idea. I thought she was just--"
"Working?" he asked.
Vanessa swallowed. "I didn't mean anything cruel."
Evelyn looked down. "It's all right."
"No," Michael said. "It isn't."
He did not raise his voice. Around them, guests pretended to adjust napkins and sip water. No one wanted to be seen staring, yet everyone listened.
Evelyn sat carefully, as if the chair belonged to someone else. Michael stood behind her with one hand on the back of the chair. He had built an empire from discipline and silence.
But he did not know what to say to the mother he had believed abandoned him.
Evelyn looked up.
"You were not supposed to find me like this," she said.
Michael's face softened.
"I was supposed to find you years ago."
