CHAPTER 3: Chapter 4 - The Story She Never Told

They left the ballroom for a small sitting room where the music softened behind the doors. Evelyn sat on the edge of a velvet chair, still holding herself like a worker waiting for instructions. Michael stood by the mantel, unable to sit.
"I thought you left me," he said.
Evelyn closed her eyes. "I know."
"Grandfather said you took money and disappeared. He said you didn't want a child slowing you down."
A thin breath left her. "Your grandfather said many things."
Michael turned. "Tell me yours."
She told him about the winter after his father died, when the Reed family lawyers came to her tiny apartment. They said Michael would lose his inheritance if she fought for custody. Then they brought papers she did not understand and a threat she understood perfectly: if she stayed, they would bury her in court until Michael suffered for it.
"I signed because I was afraid," she said. "Not for myself. For you."
Michael's hand tightened around the mantel.
"You never wrote?"
"Every birthday. Every Christmas. I sent letters to the house, then to your schools, later to your office." "I kept copies. It made me feel less foolish."
Michael's eyes moved slowly, searching the past for cracks he had missed.
"I never received one," he said.
Evelyn nodded. "I know that now."
