CHAPTER 8: Chapter 9 - A Different Kind of Gala
Two weeks later, Michael returned to the ballroom. The same chandeliers glowed, but this time there were no cameras, no society pages, no donors waiting to be impressed.
The event was smaller: hotel staff, kitchen workers, housekeepers, security guards, waiters, and their families. Michael had rented the room and asked the staff to come as guests.
Vanessa arrived too. She helped place name cards on the tables and looked nervous enough to be human.
Evelyn stood by the entrance, not by the column. She wore a simple navy dress Michael had not bought; a woman from housekeeping had lent it and insisted it suited her.
Michael walked to her from the main aisle. This time his face did not carry shock. It carried care.
"Ready?" he asked.
"No," Evelyn said. "But I'm here."
He offered his arm. She took it after a small pause.
At the front, Michael introduced a scholarship fund for the children of hotel workers. He named it after Evelyn.
She stared at him. "Michael."
"It's not charity," he said quietly. "It's overdue respect."
The applause began softly, then grew. Evelyn did not cry. She only stood straighter, as if the sound returned a little of what silence had taken.
