CHAPTER 4: Chapter 5 - Vanessa's Apology

When they returned, the gala had changed shape. The chandeliers still glowed. Guests spoke carefully, their eyes sliding away whenever Michael looked up.
Vanessa waited near the marble column, her champagne flute nearly untouched. For once, she did not look certain.
"Mrs. Reed," she said, stepping forward. "I owe you an apology. What I said was ugly. I said it because I thought no one important would care. That makes it worse, not better."
Evelyn looked surprised. She had expected excuses, not honesty.
Michael watched closely. Public shame could imitate remorse, but some words still cost something.
Evelyn folded her hands. "Thank you. I don't want trouble."
"You didn't cause it," Michael said.
Vanessa looked at him. "I did. And so did everyone who laughed."
No one laughed now.
The host tried to restart the evening, but Michael lifted one hand. The room settled again. People had followed him for years because he never wasted words.
"Tonight was meant to celebrate dignity," he said. "Some of us needed a reminder of what dignity looks like when it isn't wearing diamonds."
Evelyn looked down, overwhelmed.
Michael continued, calm and clear. "This is Evelyn Reed. She is my mother. She worked in this hotel tonight because life was not kind to her, and because I did not know enough to find her sooner. That ignorance ends now."
