The Pastry on the Marble Floor / Chapter 1 / 15 · 92 views

CHAPTER 1: A Brioche Falls on Marble

The brioche rolled across the ballroom floor like a small golden accusation.
Maisie Rivers stood beside the silver pastry stand in a white lace dress, one hand still lifted, her blue ribbon slipping loose from her curls. Around her, the Harrington Foundation gala glowed beneath chandeliers so bright they made every diamond look innocent.
She had only reached for the pastry because a server smiled and nodded. Six years old was young enough to believe permission when it was kind.
Sebastian Vale saw her first. He crossed from the donor circle in his gray suit, face tight with the kind of anger rich men tried to make look like discipline.
'That table is not for children,' he said.
Maisie froze. The pastry slipped from her fingers, bounced once, and left crumbs across the marble.
A few guests laughed before they understood the sound coming from the child was not embarrassment. It was fear.
Then she stumbled backward into the wooden easel, lost her balance, and fell hard on her hands.
The music kept playing for two seconds too long.
Across the room, Vivian Rivers turned at the exact moment her daughter began to cry.
