CHAPTER 12: When Donors Become Witnesses
Wealthy rooms rarely change all at once.
They shift by inches.
A donor stepped away from Sebastian first, pretending to check on his wife. Then a board member moved closer to Lydia's table. A museum patron who had toasted Sebastian's leadership at the cocktail hour suddenly found Vivian's daughter worthy of a sympathetic look.
Cowardice was still cowardice, even when it arrived late wearing concern.
Vivian noticed, but she did not waste anger on it. The room had never been brave. She had only needed it to be honest long enough for the record.
The foundation chair cleared his throat.
'The scheduled vote is postponed pending review.'
Sebastian turned on him. 'You cannot be serious.'

Maisie reached toward the floor, pointing at her fallen silver shoe.
Vivian bent carefully, picked it up, and held it in one hand while holding her daughter with the other.
The room watched a mother collect what mattered.
