CHAPTER 11: The Smile That Could Not Survive
Sebastian tried one final performance.
He softened his face, spread his hands, and looked around as if inviting the room back to sanity.
'Vivian and I are a family. Families have difficult moments. I spoke sharply, yes. But she is twisting a private concern into a spectacle.'
The speech might have worked an hour earlier.
It could not work with crumbs still visible on the marble and Maisie's tear marks drying against Vivian's shoulder.
The security director returned with a tablet held face down. He did not play the footage for the room. That mercy belonged to the child, not Sebastian.
He spoke to Lydia instead.
'We have clear audio and visual.'
Sebastian's smile remained for half a second after his confidence left. It looked strange on him then, like a chandelier lit in an empty house.
Vivian watched him realize that charm was only useful when no one kept records.
'You wanted everyone looking at her,' Vivian said. 'Now they are looking at you.'
No one corrected her.
No one laughed.
The smile finally disappeared.
