CHAPTER 13: Receipts Beneath White Roses

Lydia had more than the trust document.
She had emails printed and timestamped. She had draft agendas, altered guest lists, and a message from Sebastian instructing staff to place Maisie at a side table with the children's entertainers instead of beside Vivian during the vote.
'No optics issue if the girl is off-camera,' Lydia read.
The words sounded worse in the ballroom than they had on paper.
Sebastian looked toward Vivian, but she did not rescue him from the sentence he had written himself.
Near the white roses, the event manager began quietly giving statements to the security director. A server admitted Sebastian had ordered that the pastry stand remain open but out of reach, 'to see whether the child behaved.'
Vivian closed her eyes for one second.
The cruelty had not been spontaneous. It had been staged like the flowers, the lighting, the vote.
Maisie pressed her fingers against Vivian's cheek.
'Mama?'
Vivian opened her eyes and smiled for her daughter, not for the room.
'I'm here.'
That was the only promise the child needed in that moment.
Everything else could be handled by adults who had finally remembered how to be useful.
