CHAPTER 10: Maisie's Locked Inheritance

Lydia lifted the first document from the folder.
It was not dramatic paper. No gold border, no wax seal, no flourish meant to impress people who believed power needed theater. It was a trust amendment filed three years earlier, after Vivian's first husband died and Elaine Rowe's estate settled into its final shape.
Sebastian stared at it as if the page had insulted him personally.
'The Rowe Foundation voting interest is held for Maisie Rivers until she turns twenty-five,' Lydia said. 'Vivian Rivers serves as guardian trustee. No transfer may occur under marital pressure, incapacity claim, or emergency board motion without independent review.'
A murmur passed through the room.
Maisie did not understand the words. She only knew the adult holding her had stopped shaking.
Sebastian did understand.
The foundation was not waiting for his signature. The hall was not his ladder. The collection was not a dowry Vivian had brought into his ambition.
Every speech he had prepared for the vote had been built on a door already locked from the inside.
The key had been in the name of the little girl he had just humiliated.
