CHAPTER 3: The Name Margaret Never Heard

For a moment, Margaret heard nothing.
Not the wind. Not the distant road. Not the small cry rising from the baby's mouth.
Her whole life narrowed to Daniel's name carved into gray stone and the sentence Grace had placed beneath it.
"No," Margaret said.
It was not an argument. It was a reflex.
Grace lowered her eyes. "I know how this sounds."
"You know nothing about how this sounds to me."
The baby stirred again. Grace rocked her instinctively, one careful movement practiced by sleepless nights rather than confidence.
Margaret wanted to accuse her of lying. She wanted to protect Daniel from a story he was no longer alive to confirm. But the baby's face was turned toward the stone, and there was something about the curve of her mouth that made denial feel suddenly childish.
"He wanted to tell you," Grace said. "He was waiting until after the hearing."
The word struck Margaret.
Hearing.
Daniel had mentioned a legal matter near the end, something about a woman being threatened by a powerful family. Margaret had pressed him, and Daniel had smiled that careful smile adult sons use when protecting their mothers from the truth.
He had said, "It's handled, Mom."
Margaret hated those words now.
"What hearing?" she asked.
Grace looked toward the road as if someone might still be watching.
"The one Daniel never got to attend."
