CHAPTER 8: The Grandmother Warren Vale Forgot

The first call went to Margaret's former managing partner.
The second went to a judge who still owed Daniel a favor for exposing a charity fraud no one wanted discussed.
The third went to a private security director who answered before the second ring.
Margaret never raised her voice.
That frightened Grace more than shouting would have.
Across the road, one of the black car doors opened. A man in a dark coat stepped out, phone to his ear, scanning the cemetery through the bars.
Margaret turned slightly, placing herself between him and the baby.
"Tell Warren Vale," she said into her own phone, "that if any man crosses this gate tonight, I will file the emergency petition before midnight and deliver the evidence to every reporter he pays not to ask questions."
A pause followed.
Then the man outside lowered his phone.
Grace stared at Margaret as if seeing the outline of another woman beneath the grieving mother in black.
Margaret looked at Diana.
"He thought this child had no family," she said.
Her eyes lifted to the waiting cars.
The baby made a small sound then, not a cry, just a living note in the cold air. Margaret glanced down and felt the anger settle into something cleaner. Not revenge. Protection.
"That was his mistake."
