CHAPTER 5: Daniel's Ribbon Around Her Wrist

Margaret bent before she could stop herself.
Grace held still as the older woman reached toward the baby's wrist.
The ribbon was faded navy blue, the exact shade of the hospital bracelet Daniel had kept from a childhood surgery when he was eight. He had worn it on his backpack for years because he said surviving anything deserved a trophy.
Margaret had teased him about it.
Daniel had kept it anyway.
Now it circled a newborn's hand.
"Where did you get this?" Margaret asked, and the sharpness had left her voice.
Grace's eyes filled again.
"Daniel tied it there the night before he died. He said every Hale child needed proof they were harder to erase than people expected."
Margaret looked away because the cemetery blurred.
For six weeks, she had grieved a son whose final days she thought she understood.
Now she saw only doors he had closed to protect her, calls he had shortened, dangers he had carried without complaint.
There were photographs of Daniel at every age in Margaret's house, yet she had never imagined one more version of him arriving after his funeral: not a photograph, not a memory, but a living child breathing against the cold air of a cemetery.
The baby yawned, impossibly calm between them.
"What is her name?" Margaret asked.
Grace answered softly.
"Diana. He named her after you."
