CHAPTER 4: White Lilies and an Old Threat

Margaret set the lilies on the grass because her hand had begun to tremble.
Grace noticed and seemed to shrink inside her coat.
"I didn't come for money," she said quickly. "I don't want the house, or his accounts, or anything from you. I just needed her to know where he was."
"She is a newborn."
"I know." Grace's voice broke. "But I didn't want the first place connected to her father to be a courtroom."
Margaret studied her then.
Not the tears, but the way Grace kept looking behind her. Not the grief, but the fear sitting beneath it like a second shadow.
"Who is after you?" Margaret asked.
Grace swallowed.
"My stepfather. Warren Vale. He owns half the prosecutors in this county and thinks my daughter belongs in his family's control. Daniel found the documents proving he falsified guardianship papers before she was even born."
Margaret knew the Vale name. Everyone did.
Old money. Political dinners. Smiling charity photographs.
Margaret remembered a fundraiser where Warren Vale had kissed her hand and spoken warmly about family values while two assistants hurried behind him like frightened birds. Daniel had stood beside her that night and muttered, "Men like that always own a nicer smile than they deserve."
Daniel had always despised men who bought silence.
Margaret looked at the baby again.
A tiny fist had escaped the blanket. Around it was a thin blue ribbon tied in a knot Margaret recognized too well.
