CHAPTER 15: Morning Belongs to the Child

Morning came pale over Moretti House.
The white roses were gone. The engagement candles had burned out in silver holders. Staff moved quietly, not with fear this time, but with the strange relief of people waking after a storm and finding the roof still above them.
Lily slept until nine with the teddy bear under one arm and Elena in the chair beside her bed.
Sebastian sat in the hallway all night, jacket folded over his knees, reading every page he had been too busy to know existed.
By breakfast, the house rules had changed.
No visitor would enter Lily's wing without her father's permission. No staff member would be punished for protecting the child. No fiancee, investor, relative, or priest would ever again be allowed to turn Lily's grief into discipline.
Elena came downstairs in her own clothes, not a uniform.
Sebastian met her at the foot of the staircase.
'Miss Ruiz,' he said, 'my daughter asked whether you could sit with us for breakfast.'
Elena looked past him.
Lily stood at the table in pajamas, holding the teddy bear, smiling for the first time since the chandelier had watched everything.
'Only if she wants to,' Sebastian added.
Elena walked toward the child.
The mansion did not become gentle in one night. Houses like that had too much history for miracles.
But under the morning light, Lily reached for Elena's hand, and every person in the room understood who had saved whom.
