CHAPTER 9: The Velvet Case Beside the Roses

The second secret was not in Elena's notebook.
It sat in a velvet case beside the white roses, waiting for the engagement toast.
Sebastian had thought it held Vivienne's wedding jewelry. He had approved the delivery himself without opening it because men who trusted too little in business sometimes trusted too much in love.
His attorney opened the case now.
No necklace waited inside.
There were amended trust documents, temporary guardianship forms, and a proposed transfer giving Vivienne household authority over Lily's care after the wedding.
A gold pen lay across the papers like a blade that preferred signatures to blood.
The attorney looked at Sebastian. 'These require your signature tonight.'
Vivienne's voice turned soft. 'I was trying to stabilize the family.'
Sebastian lifted one page.
'By removing my daughter from my house?'
'By giving her structure.'
Lily hid the teddy bear against Elena's side.
Sebastian saw the answer there.
Structure was the word cruel people used when kindness would not obey them.
