CHAPTER 1: The Phone at the Altar

The priest had not finished the first line of the vows when Julian Voss pulled out his phone.

Ava Sterling stood before him in a fitted white lace gown, hands trembling around a bouquet of ivory roses. Instead, Julian held the phone inches from Ava’s face.

“Tell them,” he said.

His voice cut through the church.

Ava stared at the screen. A paused video showed her sitting inside the Sterling Foundation office late at night, opening a financial file she had never seen before. A red number beneath the image suggested millions of dollars were missing.

She whispered, “That video is edited.”

Julian turned toward the guests.

“My bride stole from her own family’s charity.”

A wave of shocked breathing moved through the pews.

Ava’s eyes filled.

He leaned closer.

“Sign the transfer agreement,” he said quietly, “or I play the rest.”

Ava looked toward the front pew reserved for her family.

It was empty.

Her father had not spoken to her in eleven months.

Julian knew that.

It was why he chose the altar.

A tear slipped down Ava’s cheek.

Then the church doors opened behind the guests.

Everyone turned.

Victor Sterling entered wearing a black suit, his gray hair swept back, his face hard with fury.

He looked at Julian.

“Play all of it,” he said.

Julian’s arm remained raised, but the phone no longer looked like a weapon. It looked like something he had forgotten to hide. Ava saw the change in the guests too. A moment earlier, they had watched her as the accused. Now every face turned toward the man who had chosen a wedding altar for an ambush.

Victor did not rush. He walked with the measured calm Ava remembered from board meetings, each step forcing Julian to wait for the answer he had never expected.
