CHAPTER 10: The Woman Behind the Recording

She instructed Julian to force the agreement before the ceremony and warned him not to let Ava speak privately with Victor. Her voice sounded familiar to several guests.

Then she entered from the side chapel.

Margaret Voss, Julian’s mother, wore a silver dress and carried the composed expression of a woman accustomed to surviving her son’s mistakes. Julian’s face changed.

“Mother, leave.”

Margaret did not move.

Victor stared at her.

“You helped him.”

Margaret lifted her chin.

“I protected my family.”

Ava almost laughed at the familiar excuse.

Margaret had introduced Julian to the lenders. She helped structure the shell companies and believed the Sterling marriage would rescue them. Three weeks earlier, Margaret sent Victor a letter claiming Ava requested no contact at the wedding. The signature was forged.

Victor opened the black folder and removed the letter.

Rachel confirmed the forgery.

Margaret’s calm finally broke.

Ava looked between mother and son.

The investigators separated Julian and Margaret.

Neither looked like family now.

Only partners whose deal had failed.

Margaret looked toward the guests for sympathy and found none. Her friends avoided her eyes. Julian’s business partners moved away from the pew where she had been seated.

Ava understood why Margaret had wanted a public wedding. Public approval had always been part of the transaction.

Now the same audience became the one asset she could not control.
