CHAPTER 10: The Name Above the Doors
By midnight, the gala was over without anyone announcing it.
Guests left in quiet groups under black umbrellas, carrying the kind of gossip money could not fully bury. The orchestra packed its instruments without finishing the final set. The champagne tower remained untouched beside the place where Margaret had been forced to kneel.
Julian walked his mother to the front doors.
Outside, rain silvered the steps and blurred the waiting cars.
Margaret paused beneath the Veyron crest carved above the entrance.
For years, she had entered through side doors, back halls, kitchens, laundry rooms, and corridors where no guest would see her face.
Tonight, Julian held the main door open for her.
Not as a favor. Not as a performance. As a correction. The house did not become kinder because the door opened, but the line between past and future became visible in its frame.
Celeste watched from the staircase, smaller now without the room behind her.
Richard stood beside her, but not close enough to look loyal.
"What happens now?" Margaret asked softly.
Julian looked up at the crest.
"Now they learn whose name was missing."
He took her hand and stepped into the rain with her.
Behind them, the chandelier still burned over the marble floor, bright and useless.
For the first time in twenty years, Margaret left through the front doors.
And no one dared ask her to clean anything.
