CHAPTER 6: The Folder Under the Chandelier

The older woman was Amelia Price, the family attorney Richard had retired six months after Margaret disappeared from the official record.
She had not been invited to the gala.
Julian had invited her anyway.
Amelia stopped beneath the central chandelier and opened the leather folder with hands that did not tremble.
She had served the Veyron family long enough to know where they hid their damage. She also knew the difference between loyalty and complicity, and tonight she had finally chosen the former over the latter.
The cameras that had been hired to film donors now turned toward her folder, as if the whole room understood that the real ceremony had just begun.
"I was asked to bring original documents," she said.
Celeste's voice sharpened. "This is a private event."
"A public fundraiser held under a charitable foundation," Amelia replied. "With board members present. That makes it convenient."
A murmur passed through the guests.
Richard looked at Julian, and for one second he was not a titan of industry. He was a man begging his son not to open a door he had locked years ago.
Julian did not soften.
Amelia lifted the first page.
"Margaret Hale Veyron was legally married to Richard Veyron before Julian's birth. The divorce filing was never completed. Her removal from foundation records was unauthorized. Her trustee shares remain valid."
The ballroom changed temperature.
No glass fell. No one screamed. The old-money crowd did what it always did when confronted with disgrace: it inhaled quietly and calculated which side would still have power tomorrow.
Celeste looked from face to face, searching for someone willing to laugh first. No one saved her.
Celeste whispered, "No."
Julian finally stood, still holding his mother's hand.
