CHAPTER 4: What Celeste Buried

For twenty years, the Veyron family had told one story well.
Julian's birth mother had been unstable. She had left the estate when he was a baby. Richard had raised him with dignity. Celeste, graceful and generous, had stepped into the empty place and saved the boy from scandal.
It was a beautiful story because rich families could afford beautiful lies.
Margaret had lived inside the lie like a servant inside a locked room.
She cooked when Celeste dismissed staff. She waited outside hospital doors when Julian was sick. She signed no school forms, appeared in no portraits, and kept no place at any table where her son sat under a family crest that was partly hers.
Richard had promised her protection if she stayed quiet.
Celeste had promised worse if she did not.
Julian had learned the truth slowly.
A letter in a locked desk. A hospital bracelet hidden inside an old biscuit tin. A photograph of Margaret holding him in a blanket before her name was erased from every family file.
He had not come home early by accident.
He had come home because tonight, the foundation planned to name Celeste as permanent trustee over assets that should have passed through Margaret's bloodline.
Julian had read that clause at dawn in a London apartment, sitting alone with a cup of coffee gone cold. The document did not look emotional. That was the cruelty of it. A signature could erase a woman more neatly than a scream.
He had booked the first flight home without calling his father. He wanted to see what they did when they believed no one important was watching.
And Celeste had chosen this night to make his mother kneel.
