CHAPTER 9: The Heir Chooses Blood

Security entered quietly, not with drama, but with procedure.
That was when Celeste understood the evening was no longer a family disagreement. It was an investigation with chandeliers.
One guard stood near the ballroom doors. Another spoke softly to Amelia. Richard did not interfere.
He had spent too many years asking silence from others. Now silence was all he had left.
Julian removed his tuxedo jacket and placed it around Margaret's shoulders.
The fabric was warm from him and expensive enough to buy a month of groceries for most of the people who had served the gala. Margaret tried to refuse it by instinct. Years of training had taught her not to take anything visible.
Julian only drew it more carefully around her. That quiet insistence said what he could not say without breaking.
The gesture was small, but everyone saw it.
The heir had chosen his side in public.
"Julian," Richard said, his voice barely holding. "Do not destroy this family."
Julian looked around the room where his mother had been humiliated for sport.
"You destroyed it when you made her bow her head so you could keep yours high."
Margaret touched his arm.
She was not asking him to stop.
She was reminding him not to become them.
Julian nodded once, understanding.
Then he faced the board members.
"Effective tonight, I will not accept any foundation role until my mother's name is restored to every record."
The room went silent enough to hear Celeste breathe.
