The Woman on the Marble Steps
The gala at Vistion Hall was supposed to be silent money and polite applause.
Ava Bennett sat halfway down the grand staircase in a champagne satin dress, one hand gripping the cold marble rail, the other pressed carefully over the small curve beneath her ribs.
The chandelier above her kept shining as if nothing ugly had happened under it.
At the top of the stairs, Celeste Vale stood beside Grant Voss in a silver gown that caught every flash of light. She looked more offended by Ava's survival than by the shove everyone had seen.
Grant did not move at first.
That was the part Ava would remember later.
Not the gasp from the guests. Not the sting in her shoulder. Not the way Celeste had smiled before stepping too close.
She would remember her husband's polished shoes staying still on the landing while she fought to breathe with dignity.
Celeste lifted her chin and said softly enough to sound elegant, 'You should have stayed home.'
Ava looked up through the blur of chandelier light.
No one reached her quickly except a young server who stopped three steps below with a tray shaking in both hands, terrified that helping the wrong woman might cost him his job.
That was the power of rooms like this. They trained ordinary kindness to wait for permission.
'I did,' she said. 'This is my family's house.'
