CHAPTER 5: The Hall Was Never Grant's

Grant had told the city he was restoring Vistion Hall.
He said it in interviews with rolled sleeves and humble smiles. He posed in front of scaffolding. He accepted praise for preserving history.
He never mentioned that Bennett money had saved the building after his own investors withdrew.
He never mentioned that Ava had signed the private guarantees.
He certainly never mentioned that Leonard Bennett still owned the land beneath the marble, the air rights above the ballroom, and the foundation board that controlled every gala worth attending.
Celeste heard only pieces of this as Leonard's attorney stepped forward with a black folder.
Her eyes moved from Leonard to Ava, then to Grant.
Grant's silence told her enough.
The wife she had mocked was not a decorative obstacle.
She was the reason the room existed.
Ava slowly rose with help from a physician who had come in behind Leonard's security.
She refused to let Grant touch her.
Grant had begged for Bennett trust at the beginning, presenting himself as a visionary trapped by cautious banks. Ava had believed him because love makes ambition look noble until it starts demanding sacrifices from everyone but itself.
Now the old speeches returned to her like receipts.
That refusal landed harder than a shout.
