CHAPTER 10: The Last Step Belonged to Her

Near midnight, Ava descended the staircase on her own.
A physician waited below. Leonard waited beside the open doors. Security kept the hall still, and the chandelier washed everything in merciless gold.
Grant stood halfway up, exactly where he had stopped when it mattered.
Celeste watched from the edge of the landing, smaller now than the dress she had worn to replace a wife.
Ava paused on the final step.
For one moment, the room held only breathing, rain against the windows, and the faint hum of cameras that had never blinked.
Grant said her name.
She did not turn until she reached the floor.
'You wanted me beneath you,' Ava said. 'Remember this view.'
Leonard offered his arm, but Ava did not take it yet.
She walked forward alone first.
Past the attorneys. Past the guests. Past the husband who had mistaken silence for weakness.
Only when she reached the open doors did she place her hand lightly on her father's sleeve.
Behind her, Vistion Hall remained bright.
Outside, camera flashes waited beyond the rain, but Ava did not lower her head. For years, she had hidden the bruises that were not visible: dismissals, absences, dinners where Grant let other women laugh at her restraint.
Tonight, restraint became testimony.
But everything Grant owned inside it had gone dark.
