CHAPTER 3: The Husband Who Hesitated

Grant came down three steps, then stopped again.
The delay lasted perhaps two seconds.
In a marriage, two seconds can become evidence.
Ava looked at him while the guests whispered beneath the chandelier. His face held shock, shame, calculation, and something worse than all of it.
Fear of choosing the wrong side in public.
Celeste reached for his arm. 'Grant, she slipped.'
Ava almost laughed, but it would have hurt too much.
She had lived three years beside a man who made decisions by reading rooms. Tonight, the room was reading him back.
Grant finally descended to her, crouching at a careful distance as if compassion might ruin his suit.
'Ava,' he said, low and urgent. 'Say nothing right now.'
Her eyes found his.
'You watched her,' Ava whispered.
His jaw tightened.
Ava remembered another Grant then: the man who once walked two miles in the rain because her car had broken down, the man who used to hold doors open without needing anyone to admire him for it.
Power had not changed him all at once. It had simply given his worst instincts a larger room.
Behind him, Celeste's confidence returned. She thought silence could still be purchased.
