CHAPTER 10: The Mother He Chose
After Catherine left, no one knew whether to clap, speak, or pretend the gala had ended normally.
Grant solved it by taking the microphone from the podium.
The chandeliers reflected in his eyes. His son stood beside Evelyn, one small hand in hers and the other holding Grant's jacket closed at his chest.
Grant looked at the donors who had praised him for leadership for years while his own child learned to whisper for help at home.
"The foundation will be closed for the evening," he said. "If you gave tonight because you believed in protecting children, then forgive me for learning too late that protection begins in my own house."
No one moved.
He lowered the microphone and went to Henry.
"Do you want to go home?" he asked.
Henry looked at Evelyn before answering.
Grant understood the answer before it came.
"Only if she comes," Henry whispered.
Evelyn closed her eyes for one second, fighting the kind of tears she never allowed herself at work.
Grant nodded.
"Then she comes. Not as staff. As the person who kept my son safe when I failed to."
Henry leaned into Evelyn again, softer this time.
The ballroom stayed quiet around them.
For once, the silence did not belong to Catherine.
It belonged to a child who had finally been believed.
