CHAPTER 3: Catherine Performs Motherhood

Catherine Whitmore knew how to look like a mother.
She knew which hand to place on Henry's shoulder during photographs. She knew when to laugh softly at his nervous answers. She knew how to tell magazines that motherhood had made her humble while a nanny carried Henry's schoolbag behind her.
She had built an image around the boy.
Every Christmas card showed Catherine kneeling beside Henry under gold lights. Every interview described her as devoted. Every charity speech used the same phrase: no child should feel unseen.
At home, Henry learned to become invisible before dinner.
Evelyn had built a life around him.
Evelyn woke when Henry had nightmares. Evelyn knew he hated peas but would eat carrots if they were cut small. Evelyn knew the song his first teacher used when he panicked before class. Evelyn knew he counted chandelier crystals when adults argued.
Catherine knew none of it.
She knew schedules, photographers, and punishments.
At the gala, when Henry clung to Evelyn, Catherine saw more than disobedience. She saw proof that the beautiful story she sold to the city had a crack down the middle.
Her voice sharpened.
"Evelyn, put him down. Staff do not touch family in front of guests."
Evelyn looked up slowly.
The entire ballroom waited for her to obey.
She did not move.
Henry's fingers tightened around her uniform, and Grant saw fear in his son that had never been meant for a stranger.
